Old Dog Tricks: Reloading A Revolver

I did a very casual and very unscientific review of gun sales in my local area.  Gun shop operators told me that about 30-40 % of the guns they sell for personal defense are revolvers.  The vast majority of those are small frame “pocket” type guns.  If you have chosen to carry a revolver for personal defense, you need to know some of the lessons we learned in Law Enforcement over the years.  Read More »

“Sovereign citizens” and Law Enforcement

This  video was created to help law enforcement agencies better prepare for encounters with “sovereign citizens.” In the case of two West Memphis, Ark., police officers, Brandon Paudert and Bill Evans, a routine traffic stop of father-and-son sovereign citizen duo Jerry and Joe Kane in May proved fatal when son Joe, 16, leaped from the car firing an AK-47, cutting down both officers. The Kanes died in a shootout with police an hour later in a Wal-Mart parking lot after wounding two more officers. SPLC estimates that as many as 300,000 people may consider themselves sovereign citizens — and the number is growing.

Deadly Force Decisions: The First Step

When I first became a police officer, I carried a six-shot revolver. Portable radios were bigger and heavier than bricks. There were no
cages in the patrol cars, and the patrol cars had a red light and a blue light on top. At least I had TWO lights on my car! The idea of in-car computers was science fiction.

Know the Law: Part Two

In Know the Law, Part 1, I discussed the definition of deadly force and when you may be able to use it in self-defense. Now let’s look
at the legal guidelines for using deadly force.

Every state has guidelines for the use of deadly force. If you are a legally armed citizen, it is your responsibility to know those
guidelines before you carry a gun for personal defense.

As an instructor certified to teach the use of deadly force, I have seen similarities in the laws of many states. Below are some common
guidelines that may help you prepare to make the decision on using deadly force.

Playing the Odds: Training for real gunfights

Training for real gunfights is a tricky business. The reality is that very little is known about law enforcement officers involved in
dynamic critical incidents. Even less is known about civilians who are involved in such incidents.

The Survival Sixth Sense

It’s late at night. You’re on your way home after a hard day at work. As you walk to your car in the parking lot, something suddenly seems wrong. You can’t exactly put your finger on it, but you can tell, somehow, that something is wrong.
